Euro 2008 Spain beats Italy on penalties, advances top Euro 2008 semifinals.

Jun 23 2008

For two teams with such painful memories of penalties Spain and Italy showed precious little desire to avoid them on Sunday but few could argue with Cesc Fabregas when he described his side's win as "football justice".

Iker Casillas saved two penalties and Cesc Fabregas scored the winning kick to give Spain a 4-2 shootout victory over World Cup champion Italy on Sunday and a spot in the European Championship semifinals. After an often dull 0-0 draw, the man-of-the-match Casillas saved penalties from Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Di Natale.

Euro 2008 Groups Brief

Group A
Turkey and Czech Republic could face a penalty shootout on Sunday to qualify for a Euro 2008 quarter-final clash with Croatia although both sides are determined to avoid relying on the lottery of spot kicks.

A very different Portugal team could take the field in the Euro 2008 quarter-finalists' last group game against Switzerland in Basel on Sunday.

Group B

Germany will face Austria in a final group game
on Monday.

Group C
Italy are pushing their reputation as slow starters to the extreme but feel they can beat France next week after
showing promise in the 1-1 draw with Romania.

France were left licking their wounds with their hopes of qualifying hanging by a thread after suffering their heaviest defeat in a finals for 50 years at the hands of a brilliant Dutch side

Group D
Spain face Sweden in their second match, knowing a win for either side would leave them on the verge of a place in the quarter-finals.

Holders Greece take on Russia with both anxious to avoid a second defeat that would seriously damage their qualification hopes.
