Arne Slot said Liverpool should be able to get a result away at Brighton after a 2-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium left the club’s Champions League hopes under greater pressure on Saturday.
Danny Welbeck scored in each half for Brighton, while Milos Kerkez briefly brought Liverpool level after Hugo Ekitike had been forced off injured in the opening eight minutes. Liverpool then faded after the break, with Welbeck’s second goal deciding the match.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot admitted Brighton away is a difficult fixture but said Liverpool still fell below the standard expected of the club.
He said: “As much as I dislike us losing here today, Brighton away has always been a difficult one and will always be a difficult one as long as they keep bringing in so many good players.
“But there are other games where we should have picked up more points, like last week against Tottenham.
“That is far more unacceptable than this. But even away at Brighton, a club like Liverpool should be able to get a result.”
Slot also acknowledged the pressure around Liverpool’s league position, with the Reds now needing a strong finish to secure Champions League football. He said: “There is always pressure at Liverpool. On me, on the players. That is completely normal.
“We have qualified for the quarter finals of the FA Cup and the Champions League but in the league we need to make sure that in the end, we qualify for the Champions League.”
The defeat was Liverpool’s 10th in the Premier League this season, their first time reaching that figure since 2015-16. It also marked the seventh time a defending top-flight champion has lost 10 or more league matches in a season, and the first since Chelsea in 2017-18. Liverpool have now conceded 42 league goals in 2025-26, already more than in each of the last two campaigns.
Slot said the second half told the story of the result. He added: “We kept trying. In the second half we were close but they were closer to scoring a third one than we were.
“It is clear that we have lost a lot of points after playing in Europe. Today we also have to give credit to Brighton. The first half was equal but in the second half, Brighton were the better team on the pitch.”
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler praised his side’s display after a result that strengthened their own push for European qualification. He told BBC Match of the Day: “It was a great performance, especially in the second half. We played really good football.”
