Arne Slot: Future Bright for Liverpool Despite Struggles

Arne Slot reacts during Liverpool Premier League match

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said the “future looks bright for Liverpool” despite the club enduring a difficult defence of their Premier League title during the 2025–26 season. The Reds currently sit sixth in the table after nine league defeats but remain active in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Slot’s comments come as Liverpool prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Tottenham, with the manager acknowledging inconsistency while maintaining confidence in the squad’s long-term trajectory.

Title defence proves far more demanding

Liverpool entered the season as defending champions after securing the club’s 20th top-flight title last year, finishing the campaign with four matches to spare.

Matching that achievement has proved significantly harder.

Despite more than £400 million invested in strengthening the squad, Liverpool have struggled to replicate last season’s form in the Premier League. A series of inconsistent results has left them outside the Champions League places.

Even so, Slot believes the broader context of the campaign still offers encouragement.

“We know how difficult it is to achieve what we achieved last season,” he said.

Liverpool have remained competitive in other competitions, reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals while also advancing to the last 16 of the Champions League.

European and domestic progress offer encouragement

Slot pointed to those cup runs as evidence that Liverpool’s overall level remains strong.

“We played the League Cup final, we were very, very, very close to beating Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 round [of the Champions League],” he said.

While the Premier League campaign has produced setbacks, the manager suggested the squad has still made progress in key areas.

“This season, I think it's safe to say and fair to say that this season has been much more of a struggle than last season,” Slot said.

“But still, we are able to win things, quarter-finals of the FA Cup and in the last 16 in Europe.”

The Liverpool coach also highlighted the continued development of younger players and the potential for improvement over the coming seasons.

Slot sees growth within the squad

Slot argued that the current group of players has already demonstrated signs of improvement.

“And I think we've got a squad that has shown this season already that we've improved,” he said.

“And these players will be able to improve much more in the upcoming years.”

He reiterated his belief that the club’s trajectory remains positive despite the challenges of the current season.

“So, as I said many times, the future looks bright for Liverpool. I'm 100 per cent sure that the best is still to come because there's individual progress to be made, and it's already happening.”

Consistency remains the key challenge

Even while expressing optimism, Slot acknowledged that Liverpool must improve their consistency if they are to compete for major honours again.

The team’s most recent Premier League defeat came against Wolves, who were bottom of the table at the time of the match.

“We haven't been as consistent as we wanted to be,” Slot admitted.

However, he believes recent results indicate progress.

“But if you look at the last two months, I think there are more positives in terms of results than negatives,” he said.

Tottenham test offers chance to respond

Liverpool now turn their attention to Sunday’s match against Tottenham, a fixture that could influence their chances of returning to the Premier League’s top four.

Slot emphasised that building continuity within the squad remains central to the club’s long-term ambitions.

“The more and the longer they play together, that's been shown all over the world,” he said.

“Successful teams usually play long together. And that's what we're going to try to achieve with these players as well.”

For Liverpool, the immediate goal is to rediscover consistency. Slot’s message, however, is focused on the bigger picture: a squad still developing and a project he believes is moving in the right direction.
