Aston Villa Beat Lille To Reach Europa League Quarterfinals

John McGinn and Leon Bailey celebrate Aston Villa’s win over Lille

Aston Villa reached the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday after a 2-0 win over Lille at Villa Park sealed a 3-0 aggregate victory. John McGinn opened the scoring early in the second half before substitute Leon Bailey added the second late on as Unai Emery’s side extended their winning run in the competition to seven matches.

Villa had carried a one-goal advantage into the second leg after winning in France, and the first half followed that pattern of control rather than urgency. Neither side created many clear openings before the break, although Villa came close when Amadou Onana met a McGinn corner and forced Berke Ozer into a save.

The tie changed decisively after halftime. Lille briefly threatened when Nabil Bentaleb bent a free-kick toward goal, only for Emiliano Martinez to gather comfortably. Within seconds, Villa had turned that moment into the breakthrough at the other end.

Martinez’s long kick sent Jadon Sancho clear, and the forward drove inside before teeing up McGinn. The Aston Villa captain finished into the bottom-right corner to give the home side a firmer grip on the tie and leave Lille with a far steeper task.

Lille thought they had found an immediate answer when Olivier Giroud finished emphatically, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Villa then looked increasingly likely to land the next decisive blow. Ollie Watkins fired narrowly wide, and Sancho later struck the woodwork after Douglas Luiz played him in behind.

That left the contest technically alive into the closing stages, but Lille never found the goal that would have changed the mood at Villa Park. Martinez still had to react sharply to keep out a curling effort from Noah Edjouma as the visitors pushed forward late on.

Villa then settled the tie five minutes from time. Watkins, on as a substitute, drove forward and squared unselfishly for Bailey, who had been on the pitch for just 99 seconds, to finish into an empty net. It completed a composed European night for Emery’s team and confirmed their place in the last eight.

The result also strengthened Emery’s remarkable record in this competition. He has now reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup or Europa League for the eighth time, a mark no other manager has matched beyond five. Aston Villa have also now reached the quarterfinals in major European competition in three consecutive seasons.

McGinn’s goal carried extra weight as well. It was his ninth for Villa in major European competition, drawing him level with Peter Withe for the club record.

The underlying numbers reflected Villa’s control. Emery’s side generated 1.8 expected goals from eight shots, while Lille produced 0.34 from the same number of attempts. In a tie that never truly slipped from their grasp, Aston Villa looked the stronger side across both matches and finished with a margin that matched their authority.
