Barcelona host Newcastle United at Camp Nou on Wednesday, March 18, with a place in the Champions League quarterfinals on the line. The tie is level after a 1-1 first-leg draw at St. James’ Park, where Lamine Yamal converted a late penalty to leave the second leg finely balanced.
The return leg brings together two sides who both arrive with momentum. Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-2 at the weekend to maintain a strong lead at the top of the La Liga title race, while Newcastle secured a 1-0 away win over Chelsea. That combination gives the second leg added weight, with both teams carrying confidence into one of their biggest matches of the season.
Barcelona also have the added edge of home form. Since returning to the renovated Camp Nou in late 2025, the Catalan side have won all 12 matches there. Their attacking output has been particularly strong, with at least three goals scored in each of their last seven home victories.
That record matters against a Newcastle team that could not turn first-leg control into a lead. Eddie Howe’s side were the better team for long spells on Tyneside, but they travel to Spain without an advantage and with a defensive record that still raises questions. Their clean sheet against Chelsea was their first since January, and they had conceded 25 goals across the previous 12 matches.
Barcelona’s history against Premier League opposition at home also points in their favour. The Spanish side have lost only two of 37 home games against clubs from England’s top flight, and their most recent defeat in that category came against Liverpool in the 2006-07 season. Those numbers do not decide a knockout tie, but they underline how difficult Camp Nou has been for visiting English teams.
Hansi Flick still has notable absences to manage. Frenkie de Jong, Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé are all missing, but Barcelona still have enough attacking depth to pose problems across the front line. Ferran Torres is expected to start in place of Robert Lewandowski, with Yamal and Raphinha providing support from wide areas. Raphinha comes into the match after scoring a hat-trick at the weekend.
Barcelona’s expected midfield shape also offers Flick more than one route into the game. Marc Bernal is tipped to start alongside Pedri, while FermÃn López is expected to get the nod in the No. 10 role ahead of Dani Olmo. If Barcelona choose a more attack-minded setup, Olmo could come into the side with Bernal making way.
Barcelona predicted lineup vs Newcastle (4-2-3-1): J. GarcÃa; E. GarcÃa, CubarsÃ, MartÃn, Cancelo; Bernal, Pedri; Yamal, López, Raphinha; Torres.
Newcastle have their own selection issues. Lewis Miley, Fabian Schär and Emil Krafth remain unavailable, while Bruno Guimarães is the most significant absentee in midfield. Sandro Tonali faces a late fitness test, although signs point to him being available from the start.
Anthony Gordon is expected to lead the Newcastle attack after managing only a short appearance in the first leg because of illness. Gordon scored the winner against Chelsea and will now try to add to his Champions League tally in a far more demanding setting. Howe is also expected to restore Kieran Trippier at right back after the experienced defender was rested at the weekend.
Newcastle predicted lineup vs Barcelona (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.
Kick-off is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. ET, 10:45 a.m. PT and 5:45 p.m. GMT, with François Letexier appointed as referee. The setting, recent form and home record all point toward Barcelona holding the stronger position, even if Newcastle showed in the first leg that they can make this tie uncomfortable.
Prediction: Barcelona 3-1 Newcastle.
