Bayern Munich beat Atalanta 4-1 at Allianz Arena on Wednesday to complete a 10-2 aggregate victory in the Champions League round of 16. Harry Kane scored twice to reach 50 goals in the competition, while Lennart Karl and Luis Diaz also found the net as Bayern booked a quarterfinal against Real Madrid.
Bayern set the tone early and pushed Atalanta back from the opening minutes. Raphael Guerreiro forced Marco Sportiello into two saves before the Atalanta goalkeeper became central to the game’s first decisive moment after 25 minutes.
A penalty was awarded against Giorgio Scalvini for handball, and Sportiello initially kept out Harry Kane’s first attempt. The kick was ordered to be retaken, though, because Sportiello had moved off his line, and Kane converted at the second attempt to give Bayern control of both the match and the tie.
Atalanta still found moments to threaten, and Jonas Urbig was required either side of half-time to deny Mario Pasalic and Gianluca Scamacca. Those interventions kept Bayern in command before Kane extended the lead with a finish that underlined both his form and Bayern’s authority in the tie.
Harry Kane scored Bayern’s second in the 54th minute after battling through pressure from Isak Hien and Kamaldeen Sulemana before picking out the top-left corner. The goal brought up his half-century in the Champions League and effectively removed any remaining doubt over the outcome.
Bayern Munich quickly added a third as Lennart Karl curled beyond Sportiello from Luis Diaz’s lay-off. The teenager then turned provider in the 70th minute, releasing Diaz through on goal for a composed dinked finish that pushed the second-leg scoreline further in Bayern’s favour.
Atalanta did respond through Lazar Samardzic, who headed in from close range for a late consolation, but the Italian side never looked likely to change the direction of the contest. Bayern’s margin across the two legs reflected their attacking control and their ability to punish mistakes in decisive areas.
Harry Kane’s milestone added another layer to an already emphatic Bayern performance. The England captain has now reached 50 Champions League goals in 66 appearances, and only Erling Haaland and Ruud van Nistelrooy got to that mark in fewer games. Kane also moved to 47 goals in all competitions this season, the highest total of his career and the best return among players in Europe’s top five leagues.
Lennart Karl also left a notable mark on the night. At 18 years and 24 days old, Karl became the youngest German player to score and assist in a Champions League match, as well as the youngest Bayern player to do so.
The underlying numbers reinforced Bayern’s superiority across the tie. Vincent Kompany’s side produced 3.61 expected goals from 25 shots, while Atalanta generated 2.3 xG from 14 attempts. Bayern now move on to face Real Madrid in the quarterfinals after one of the most one-sided last-16 performances of the round.
