Bayern Munich Thrash Union Berlin to Extend Bundesliga Lead

Serge Gnabry celebrates during Bayern Munich’s 4-0 Bundesliga win over Union Berlin

Bayern Munich moved 12 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, at least temporarily, after a 4-0 win over Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. Serge Gnabry scored twice, while Michael Olise and Harry Kane also found the net as Vincent Kompany’s side took another step toward retaining the title.

The final margin reflected Bayern’s overall control, but Union Berlin did threaten briefly in the opening stages. Bayern were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Leon Goretzka fouled Rani Khedira just outside the area, and Lennart Karl then struck the post before Kane missed a clear chance at the other end.

Bayern eventually turned that pressure into goals late in the first half. Olise opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, cutting inside before blasting past Frederik Ronnow. Three minutes later, Union’s goalkeeper made a poor punch under pressure and Gnabry punished the error to double Bayern’s lead at the start of stoppage time.

The home side removed any remaining doubt early in the second half. Four minutes after the restart, Kane curled home to make it 3-0 and effectively finish the contest. Gnabry added Bayern’s fourth in the 67th minute, drilling beyond Ronnow at his near post after Olise’s blocked shot had kept the move alive.

Kane had the chance to score again late on but sent a dinked effort wide when through one-on-one. By that point, though, the result was already secure, and Bayern had long since established their superiority.

The underlying numbers underlined the scale of Bayern’s dominance. They produced 31 shots and finished with 5.53 expected goals, compared with Union Berlin’s 0.21 xG from five attempts. Those figures matched the flow of the game, with Bayern creating repeatedly and Union offering little once the match shifted decisively before halftime.

The result also brought an important defensive marker for Kompany’s team. Bayern ended a run of eight Bundesliga home matches without a clean sheet, their longest such streak at the Allianz Arena since a nine-game stretch between November 2020 and March 2021 under Hansi Flick.

Olise’s goal carried added significance as well. Union Berlin had been the only Bundesliga side against whom he had not previously registered a direct goal involvement, but he changed that with the opener and also played a central role in the move that led to Bayern’s fourth.

Bayern’s latest victory continued an already strong league campaign. Before kickoff, they had collected 67 points from 26 matches, their third-best total at that stage of any Bundesliga season. This win strengthened that position further and increased the pressure on second-placed Borussia Dortmund ahead of their match with Hamburger SV later on Saturday.

For Bayern, the afternoon delivered almost everything: four goals, a clean sheet, a two-goal performance from Gnabry, another strike for Kane, and a league lead that now looks even more commanding as the run-in approaches.
