Bruno Fernandes broke David Beckham’s Manchester United record for Premier League assists in a single season after providing two more in the win over Aston Villa. The Portugal midfielder moved to 16 assists for the 2025–26 campaign, helping United strengthen their position in the race for Champions League qualification.
Fernandes created United’s opening goal with an out-swinging corner that Casemiro flicked home, then supplied a weighted through ball for Matheus Cunha to score what proved to be the winner. Those contributions took Fernandes beyond Beckham’s previous club mark of 15 assists, set during Manchester United’s title-winning 1999–00 season.
Fernandes said the record meant more because it came while helping teammates decide matches for Manchester United. Speaking after the win, the United captain said creating goals for others was a source of satisfaction, but added that the bigger objective remained where the team finishes at the end of the season.
“It’s a huge achievement for me, but the main achievement would be in the top spot at the end of the season,” Fernandes said.
Carrick Highlights Fernandes Influence After Villa Victory
Michael Carrick said Bruno Fernandes continues to deliver in decisive moments for Manchester United, whether through goals or final passes. The interim manager said Fernandes consistently takes responsibility in training and matches and remains a player the club can rely on when pressure rises.
Carrick also described Fernandes as a player United would not want to lose, pointing to his resilience through difficult periods and his repeated ability to make the difference. The win over Aston Villa extended Manchester United’s strong run under Carrick, with the club recording a fifth successive home victory and improving to 22 points from 27 available during his interim spell.
That result carried added weight because Aston Villa are direct rivals in the battle for Champions League qualification. Manchester United now sit third in the Premier League standings and have strengthened their position at a significant point in the season.
Record Falls As Fernandes Targets Bigger Team Goals
Bruno Fernandes now holds the Manchester United single-season Premier League assist record outright, ahead of Beckham’s 15 and Nani’s 14 from the 2010–11 season. The record is another marker in a campaign that has become one of Fernandes’s most productive since arriving in Manchester.
The midfielder also became just the third Manchester United player in the Premier League era to reach 100 or more goals and 100 or more assists in all competitions, joining Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. That places Fernandes in rare company at Old Trafford and adds further weight to his influence across multiple seasons.
Fernandes said Manchester United knew Aston Villa would defend with a high line and that the timing of the team’s runs would be decisive. He said United followed their plan well and executed it in the key moments needed to win the game.
With 16 assists and eight games remaining, Fernandes has also moved within range of the Premier League single-season mark of 20, achieved by Thierry Henry in 2002–03 and later matched by Kevin De Bruyne in 2019–20. For now, though, the immediate significance lies in Manchester United’s victory, their top-four momentum and another match shaped by Fernandes.
