Cho Header Gives Midtjylland Victory at Nottingham Forest

Cho Gue-Sung celebrates scoring for Midtjylland against Nottingham Forest in the Europa League

Midtjylland beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, with substitute Cho Gue-Sung scoring the only goal in the 80th minute.

Forest controlled long spells of the match and created the better chances, but the Danish side took their opportunity when it arrived and will carry the advantage into next week’s second leg in Denmark.

Forest Had the Ball, the Territory and Most of the Chances

The result did not reflect the balance of the game for much of the night.

Forest dominated possession, played most of the match in Midtjylland’s half and finished with 22 shots to the visitors’ six. They also had 38 touches inside the opposition box, won seven corners and forced goalkeeper Elias Olafsson into five saves.

Heavy rain and strong winds made the opening stages difficult, but Forest gradually established control after Murillo cleared a Junior Brumado header off the line early on.

Elliot Anderson was central to that spell. The midfielder drove Forest forward, linked attacks and repeatedly found space as Midtjylland struggled to play out. Anderson, Igor Jesus, Ola Aina and Omari Hutchinson all tested Olafsson before the break, but Forest could not convert their pressure into a lead.

Pereira’s Adjustment Increased the Pressure

Vitor Pereira altered Forest’s shape at half-time, moving from a back three to a back four, and the change helped push Midtjylland even deeper.

The home side continued to create openings. Aina went close when an effort from close range was blocked by his own team-mate Morgan Gibbs-White, while Nicolas Dominguez and Jesus also missed further chances as Forest searched for a breakthrough.

Yet the tie remained level, and that kept Midtjylland in the contest.

The visitors offered little for long periods, but they did show flashes on the counter-attack. Valdemar Byskov struck the crossbar with a left-footed effort in one of their rare forward moments, a warning that Forest did not fully heed.

One Cross, One Header, One Goal

After surviving repeated Forest attacks, Midtjylland found the decisive moment 10 minutes from time.

Cho Gue-Sung, on as a substitute, was given too much room inside the area and met a cross from Ousmane Diao with a header that beat Forest and gave the Danish side a valuable away win.

It was a sharp punishment for Forest’s lack of finishing. Their overall numbers were strong. Their execution in the final third was not.

The Numbers That Defined the Night

Forest’s control is clear in the match data, but so is the problem that shaped the result.

Midtjylland finished third in the league phase of the Europa League and again showed why they have been difficult to handle in this competition. They had already beaten Forest 3-2 earlier in the campaign and once more made their moments count.

A Familiar Frustration for Forest

The performance offered encouragement, even if the result did not.

Pereira, appointed in February as Forest’s fourth manager of the season, had eight days to prepare his team after the 2-2 draw with Manchester City. The display suggested that work on the training ground had helped. Forest played with confidence, energy and attacking intent despite entering the tie with only one win in their previous eight matches in all competitions.

Anderson stood out in midfield, while Gibbs-White and Hutchinson also made an impact. But Forest were left with the same problem that has affected recent results: not turning good periods into goals.

The Return Leg Now Decides Forest’s European Future

Forest travel to Denmark for the second leg next Thursday needing to overturn a one-goal deficit to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

The winner of the tie will face either Stuttgart or Porto in the last eight.
