CoCo Vandeweghe and Chris Eubanks have addressed the viral on-air moment that sparked speculation about a possible falling-out during the 2026 BNP Paribas Open. Both said there is no issue between them and described the exchange as part of their usual back-and-forth.
The moment came during a Tennis Channel segment built around a light-hearted serve challenge. Vandeweghe out-served Eubanks and teased him on air, while Eubanks responded with remarks that were widely interpreted as a genuine swipe. The clip spread quickly and divided opinion among tennis fans.
Eubanks later told Front Office Sports that the exchange had been misunderstood. He said he and Vandeweghe share a close working relationship and regularly joke with one another on set.
“CoCo and I have an unbelievable relationship, like, we love having banter back and forth,” Eubanks said. “We love giving each other a hard time. She’s one of my favorite people to work with in media because of that, because there aren’t that many people that I feel that level of comfort with, of having that kind of joking banter back and forth.”
Vandeweghe also responded publicly after Eubanks’ comments were shared on X. The former world No. 9 wrote that Eubanks is “one of my favorite people” and added that she was looking forward to working with him again at this year’s French Open.
Eubanks Explains The Eyeroll That Drove The Reaction
Chris Eubanks also pointed to his exaggerated facial expression as one reason the clip took on a life of its own. He said the dramatic eyeroll, along with the way he turned toward the microphone, was intended to make the joke obvious.
“I had the overly dramatic eyeroll, which I thought would come across as a joke because of how dramatic it was,” Eubanks said. “The fact that I turned the mic, leaned my head and rolled my eyes, it was all meant to be a joke.”
That detail became central to the reaction online, where the visual element of the exchange appeared to convince many viewers that a real argument had taken place.
Media Roles Continue After Playing Careers Ended
Both CoCo Vandeweghe and Chris Eubanks have moved into tennis media following the end of their playing careers. Vandeweghe retired in 2023, while Eubanks stepped away from professional tennis last year.
Their recent comments have clarified that the viral segment reflected familiarity rather than friction. What appeared tense on screen was, by their account, a joke between two broadcasters comfortable enough to trade sharp lines in public.
