Ipswich 1-1 Millwall: Automatic Promotion Battle Stays Tight

Jack Clarke and Millwall defenders compete during Ipswich Town’s 1-1 draw at Portman Road

Ipswich Town and Millwall remained locked together in the Championship promotion race after a 1-1 draw at Portman Road on Saturday. Jack Clarke gave Ipswich the lead before Josh Coburn equalised early in the second half, leaving both sides frustrated after missing the chance to strengthen their hold on the automatic promotion places.

The match carried the intensity expected of a meeting between two teams with major stakes at the top end of the table. Ipswich started on the front foot and created the first clear openings, but Millwall showed enough threat of their own to keep the contest balanced throughout.

Ipswich nearly made their pressure count early on when Darnell Furlong’s header was cleared off the line by Jake Cooper. That intervention preserved parity, and Millwall then needed Anthony Patterson to produce an even better piece of defending by another name, with the goalkeeper making a sharp one-handed stop to turn Ivan Azon’s volley over the bar.

At the other end, Christian Walton was also called into action as Millwall looked to respond. The first half remained open, but Ipswich found the breakthrough in the 41st minute through Clarke. Cutting inside from the left, Clarke drove an effort past Patterson at his near post to give the home side the lead just before halftime.

That goal continued a productive Championship season for Clarke, who has now scored 14 league goals. The total makes him the first Ipswich player to reach 14 or more goals in the second tier since Martyn Waghorn scored 16 in the 2017-18 campaign.

Millwall responded quickly after the restart. Five minutes into the second half, Camiel Neghli delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area and Coburn was on hand to finish past Walton, restoring parity and shifting the momentum back toward the visitors.

The game then settled into a pattern of tension rather than control, with both teams aware of the significance of a single mistake. Millwall came closest to taking all three points late on when substitute Mihailo Ivanovic struck the crossbar from close range, a chance that would have changed the picture in the automatic promotion race.

The underlying numbers reflected how fine the margins were. Millwall edged the expected goals battle with 1.67 from 13 shots, while Ipswich generated 1.38 from 17 attempts. That balance matched the overall feel of the afternoon, with Ipswich carrying attacking volume and Millwall creating the slightly stronger chances.

Ipswich did at least extend another notable run, scoring in a 15th straight Championship match. It is their longest sequence of league games with a goal since a 17-game stretch spanning May 2019 to November 2023.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Derby County strengthened their push for a top-six finish with a 1-0 win over Birmingham City. Rhian Brewster scored the only goal, rising to meet Derry John Murkin’s cross as Derby collected an important three points in the playoff race.

At Portman Road, though, neither Ipswich nor Millwall found the second goal that would have given them a firmer grip on the top two, and the automatic promotion battle remains finely poised.
