Tottenham Give Igor Tudor Reprieve After Liverpool Draw

Igor Tudor on the touchline during Tottenham’s draw with Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur will keep Igor Tudor in charge after the team’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool, with the performance judged strong enough to earn the manager more time in the club’s fight against relegation. The result was Tudor’s first point since taking over in February and came at a critical moment in Spurs’ season.

Tudor replaced Thomas Frank on a temporary deal until the end of the campaign, but four defeats from his first four matches had raised serious doubts about whether he would even reach the end of the season. The display against Liverpool changed that immediate outlook.

The performance level and the spirit shown by the team were enough to convince Tottenham to continue with Tudor for now. Although the draw left Spurs only one point above the relegation zone, the manner of the result appears to have mattered as much as the point itself.

Tudor is set to remain in charge for Tuesday’s Champions League round-of-16 second leg, even if that competition has become secondary after last week’s 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid. More important for Tottenham is the next Premier League fixture, a home match against Nottingham Forest, who sit just one point behind them.

That game is presented as one of the most significant of Tottenham’s season. It will offer a more direct measure of whether the improvement against Liverpool can be turned into the points needed to move clear of danger.

Tottenham showed signs of the togetherness and intensity that had been missing in recent months. Spurs were spirited and competitive against Liverpool, and a win would not have been undeserved.

That has not erased all uncertainty around Tudor’s position. If results collapse again, Tottenham could still consider a change during the March international break. For now, however, there is confidence that Tudor can guide the team through the coming weeks.

The fixture list gives Spurs some reason for optimism. After Nottingham Forest, Tottenham face Sunderland, Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers before May begins with Aston Villa. Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton also remain on the schedule.

Tottenham still need points quickly, and Tudor remains under pressure. But after the draw with Liverpool, he has at least earned the chance to keep leading the battle for survival.
