Aston Villa manager Unai Emery called on his players to “keep fighting” after a 3–1 Premier League defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss marked Villa’s third consecutive league defeat, their worst run in the competition since February 2023.
The result also dented Villa’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification, with Manchester United moving three points clear of Emery’s side in the standings.
United seize control after level first half
Manchester United opened the scoring through Casemiro, whose header put the hosts ahead during a tightly contested first half.
Villa responded through Ross Barkley, who drew the visitors level and briefly restored momentum for Emery’s side. At that stage, the match remained balanced with both teams competing for control.
However, the second half gradually swung in United’s favour.
Goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško eventually secured victory for the home side, giving United breathing space in the race for Champions League places.
Emery reflects on turning point
Emery admitted the result was disappointing after Villa had arrived at Old Trafford with renewed confidence following a European victory earlier in the week.
Speaking after the match, the Spaniard said Villa had attempted to carry the same approach they used in Thursday’s Europa League win against Lille.
He described the first half as evenly contested but acknowledged his side struggled to regain control once United began to dominate the second period.
According to Emery, Villa needed to respond better when momentum shifted in the match.
He said the team had moments where they executed their game plan effectively, but also spells where they lost control and allowed United to dictate the tempo.
Ball control central to Villa’s strategy
Emery emphasised the importance of possession in Villa’s tactical approach.
The manager explained that controlling the ball helps limit the influence of opposing attackers and allows his team to impose their structure on matches.
During the second half at Old Trafford, however, United’s pressure prevented Villa from sustaining that rhythm.
Emery said the coaching staff would analyse in detail how the goals were conceded and identify areas that must improve in upcoming fixtures.
Champions League race remains open
Despite the defeat, Aston Villa remain in contention for Champions League qualification.
There are still several matches left in the Premier League season, and Emery stressed that his players must maintain belief as the campaign enters its decisive phase.
The Villa manager pointed out that the team’s earlier results have placed them in a strong position in the table.
Recovering quickly after setbacks will now be crucial if the club hopes to maintain its place among the league’s leading sides.
Emery demands resilience from squad
Emery ended his post-match assessment with a message focused on resilience.
He urged his players to remain positive and recover both physically and mentally before the next match.
The manager said the team must rebuild confidence, improve tactically and continue pushing forward during the final stretch of the season.
For Aston Villa, the challenge is now clear.
After three consecutive defeats, the response in the coming weeks will determine whether their season continues to target Champions League qualification or becomes a fight simply to remain among the Premier League’s top contenders.
